The Academy Team Racing regatta in Alicante came down to a single deciding race in the grand final between Real Club Náutico Torrevieja representing Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Club Náutico Alicante Costa Blanca sailing for Team Telefónica.

With the three-race final match tied at one race apiece, it was Club Náutico Alicante Costa Blanca who won the all-important final heat to claim the overall Academy Team racing regatta title.

In the match for third and fourth place overall Real Club Náutico de Calpe (Groupama sailing team) triumphed over Real Club Náutico de Valencia (Team Sanya) by two races to nil.

Speaking immediately after their victorious final race, the entire Club Náutico Alicante Costa Blanca team paid tribute to the coaching they had received from their coach, Antonia Torres.

“He made us practise hard on our communication on the water before this regatta. He taught us to shout loudly to each other and that helped us to always know where each of us was in the race and what we needed to do to get a winning combination. That helped us a lot in this regatta.”

Irene Miras (14) said “It’s been hard, but we won as a team. Without being a team, we would never have got this result”.

Daniel Leutscher, (13) paid tribute to their fellow finalists “Torrevieja has been a hard one to beat, because they managed to make us get nervous. But we’ve done a great job overall, thanks specially to our coach.”

Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad, who had earlier in the day shown all the junior teams around the Race Control room, commented:

“To win at team racing you not only have to sail well, but you need to be able to think fast and react quickly to your team’s situation in the race. I have been very impressed by all the sailors in this competition.

“Earlier on they all told me they would like to sail in the Volvo Ocean Race one day, so who knows, we may be looking at the race’s future heroes.”

The winning Club Alicante Costa Blanca sailors were Irene Miras, Gonzalo Gallego, Daniel Leutscher, Nuria Sobrino and Mario Sánchez Bellot.
