[PHOTOS] Sailing Crippled: PUMA Breaks Mast in Atlantic

We reported earlier today on PUMA’s broken mast, which they suffered in the South Atlantic Ocean on their way to Cape Town, South Africa from Alicante. PUMA Ocean Racing has released pictures of the dramatic incident, which appear below.

Mar Mostro is the third boat to suffer some kind of damage in just the first leg of the race. Team Abu Dhabi were also crippled by a broken mast, and Team Sanya suffered structural damage to their hull. Both teams made the decision to suspend racing and ship their boats to Cape Town, South Africa, in preparation for leg 2.

Further information will be posted as it becomes available. All photos by Amory Ross / Volvo Ocean Race.
