The crew onboard Franck Cammas’ Groupama 4 were feeling confident as they approached Auckland earlier today. They had a solid lead on the fleet and had dominated the leg due to smart sailing. Said Cammas, a first-time Volvo Ocean Racer, “The key thing for this leg was to be quick and to make good decisions.”

However, about 100 miles out of Auckland, a leak sprung up in the bow of the Volvo Open 70, threatening the team’s continuing successes. Despite unfavorable conditions, the team was able to patch the leak and drain 1.5 tons of water from their boat, and all while salvaging their first place position.

At 10:33 UTC, Groupama 4 crossed the finish line into Auckland. Kiwi Brad Marsh likened it to a childhood dream come true. “It feels amazing,” said Marsh. “I didn’t allow myself to think about winning up until today. But the excitement set in as we came down the coast and I realised it was all going to happen.”

As of press time, PUMA Ocean Racing held second place, 40nm from Auckland. Right on their tail were the boys of Telefonica, just 9nm behind.
