If you’re in Miami this weekend, you should definitely come on out to Bicentennial Park and have a look at what the Volvo Ocean Race has set up. Bicentennial Park is near the corner of Biscayne Boulevard and NE 11th Street.
Now that I’ve finally arrived in Miami, it’s time to reveal the first of the surprises from this trip. Today I was given the opportunity to sail onboard Mike Sanderson’s Team Sanya as part of the practice race day. Though the day began overcast, the sun eventually poked through the clouds for a bit, and conditions out on the Atlantic ranged from 10-15kts.
As far as the practice race went, Team Sanya placed third. Despite the fact that it was a practice race, the crew took it just as seriously as they would an in-port or leg start.
To go from sailing Club 420s on the Chesapeake to sailing onboard a Volvo Open 70 off the coast of Miami is quite a big switch. It was a perfect day, though, and I couldn’t be happier about getting a ride onboard. Thanks to Christina Gaither at the Volvo Ocean Race, Leslie Greenhalgh at Team Sanya, and Mike Sanderson and his crew for making it happen.
